School Based Deworming:
A Step-by-Step Guide

Are you currently working in schools where it’s time to deworm?
This guide is for Ministries of Education, state governments, and NGOs who run school systems or who work in schools or visit them regularly and who are interested in starting deworming programs within these schools.

Deworming in schools is easy: programs can be plugged into existing school infrastructure at low cost.  Deworm the World has made it even easier by providing resources for each step.  Deworm the World will provide kits, manuals, additional materials, and technical support—as well as facilitate communication and collaboration between organizations—to assist your organization in following this guide.

Deworming drugs are safe and can be delivered orally without the need for diagnosis. Under the direction of local health professionals, teachers can be easily trained to deliver the drugs on their own.  School-aged children are most at risk of worm infections, so targeting through schools is a highly effective method for achieving widespread coverage of treatment.

This step-by-step guide is based on the six steps established by the World Health Organization (WHO) which describe how to set up a deworming program in schools (Action Against Worms, January 2004).
