Step 2: Rapid
Appraisal
Before
you can make a plan, you need to know whether there are worms in your
area and, if so, how prevalent they are and of what species.
This
appraisal has already been done for many areas. If it has already been
done for your area we can help you access this information.
• Sub-Saharan
Africa: Considerable data on prevalence has both been
generated using predictive tools and collected through surveys.
Preliminary maps of predicted prevalence of Soil Transmitted Helminth
(STH) in some countries are available through this site and more will
be available shortly. Over time we plan to develop more detailed maps
which will allow you to read off prevalence in your area and help
inform planning. Until these are developed we recommend that you
contact Deworm the World at contact@dewormtheworld.org
and, to the extent possible, we will link you with what information is
available on prevalence in your area.
•
Asia: Information for some countries in Asia
is available from the WHO
Global Databank website.
For
maps of broad-scale patterns of predicted prevalence of STH in selected
countries see below.
• Angola
• Benin
• Botswana
• Burkina Faso
• Burundi
• Cameroon
• Central
African Republic
• Chad
• Congo
• Côte
d'Ivoire
• Democratic
Republic of
Congo (Zaire)
• Eritrea
• Ethiopia
• Gabon
• Gambia
• Ghana
• Guinea
• Guinea-Bissau
• Kenya
• Madagascar
• Malawi
• Mali
• Mauritania
• Mozambique
• Niger
• Nigeria
• Rwanda
• Senegal
• Sierra Leone
• Somalia
• Sudan
• Tanzania
• Togo
• Uganda
• Zimbabwe
If the data are unavailable or out
of date, a rapid appraisal by
parasitological survey may be done at minimal cost. Find out how
to do a rapid appraisal in your
district.
